Tips for Curators

Summary

Curators perform a number of functions for a Hub including: Editing Hub Overviews, Curating Author pPsts, Creating New Posts, and Curating a Hub's Twitter account and YouTube Channel.

There are many benefits to curating a Hub.

Curator Benefits

  • Help develop key overviews for their profession
  • Do starter profiles for a Hub Directory on the key organizations and people in the field
  • Communicate with the key organizations and people in the field (and potentially collaborate with and find grants and positions)
  • First to see the latest and best knowledge related to their interests
  • Assist authors with improving their communication of their research and practice through posts and Aircasts
  • Help promote your field through the Hub, its posts, and newsletters that have the most current and best content
  • Earn income through revenue sharing with Open Networks based on sponsor, exhibitor, and other revenue.

Editing Hub Overviews

The Hub Overview starts with the Wikipedia entry and other open access sources like Scholarpedia. Hub curators who are visible authors of the Overview can add new content as well as edit existing content. Hub members can also comment providing feedback and recommending additional content.

Curating Author Posts

Copyrights and Creative Commons

Curators insure that all posts abide by fair use standards.  For copyright protected content, we recommend that authors provide links to the original article and identify the author(s), publication, and date of publication. In addition, we recommend using a maximum of two paragraphs from the copyrighted material and one image or graphic.

For Creative Commons Non-Commercial (CC-NC) content e.g.  YouTube videos, we recommend that authors provide links to the original article and identify the author(s), publication, and date of publication.

Selecting the appropriate categories for a post

Curators, at their discretion, can place an author’s post in whatever primary category they deem fit. If appropriate, they can create a new category for the post. Curators can also designate secondary categories for a post. Curators need not follow the category selections that the author has recommended

Organize posts in a slider?

At the present time, you will need to change the date of publication to change the order posts appear in a slider. In Air 5.9 (coming soon), we will have a simpler, numbering system.

Creating New Posts 

1- Use Google News as one source. Set up a personalized “news topic” and/or set up a Google Alert for topics you want to track.

2- Subscribe to relevant email updates.

3- Start following in Twitter key individuals (bloggers, tweeters) and groups

Curating Hub’s Twitter account

We recommend tweeting all new posts after you reviewed, categorized, and ranked them. Some hints for tweeting include: 1- Using  post title and url, adding an image, referencing content originators personal or group Twitter account, and adding hash tags.

Start to follow key individuals and groups for content for future Digest posts and for retweeting.

Curating Custom Google Maps

1- Log into to your Hub’s gmail account (best to use a browser you don’t normally use).

2- Go to Google My Maps google.com/maps/d/

3- Select your custom map

4- Put address of location into search field then select “search” icon

5- “Add to Map”

6- Click “pencil” icon (edit), enter person and/or organization’s name in top box. Enter profile url into larger text box then “Save”

7- To change color of pin, select the “paint icon” (style), and select the color you want

8- Click “Add a layer” , then select “Untitled Layer” then enter “Layer Name” then “Save”
