NIDA

Summary

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) mission is to lead the Nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction.

This charge has two critical components. The first is the strategic support and conduct of research across a broad range of disciplines. The second is ensuring the rapid and effective dissemination and use of the results of that research to significantly improve prevention and treatment and to inform policy as it relates to drug abuse and addiction.

Strategic Plan (2016 – 2020)

NIDA is revitalizing its Strategic Plan to provide a framework for the research it will support over the next five years. On December 10, 2014, we released a Request for Information (RFI) to seek broad public input on the research priorities to be included in the plan.

NIDA is currently convening workgroups to obtain input from subject matter experts in areas for which we recognize the need for additional external input in developing our strategic priorities, including:

  • Big Data: How to improve effective data sharing, organization, analysis, and visualization
  • Complex Patients: How to foster research to address complex patients (i.e. those with multiple chronic conditions) and populations (i.e. adolescents, geriatric)
    • Addressing neurological, cognitive, and behavioral processes across the trajectory of addiction, recovery and relapse
    • Phenotypic characterization of patients
  • GEDI: How to increase our understanding of development x gene x environment interactions

The workgroup teleconferences will be open to the public.
