Summary

Allen Institute’s mission is to accelerate the understanding of how the human brain works in health and disease. Allen has been a major catalyst and facilitator of The BRAIN Initiative.

Launched in 2003 with a seed contribution from founder and philanthropist Paul G. Allen, the Allen Institute takes on large-scale initiatives designed to push brain research forward, enabling the global scientific community to more efficiently make discoveries that bring real-world utility.

At the heart of neuroscience is the study of systems. Molecular mechanisms of transcriptional regulation underlie persistent synaptic plasticity and thereby mediate learning and memory. Decoding the information content of spike trains requires an understanding of the higher-order architectures of the neural circuits in which they are embedded. The adaptations of sensory systems to efficiently encode and interpret natural scenes reflect the species’ ecological niche and evolutionary descent. The analysis of cognitive processes depends on understanding the allocation of metabolic resources, from adenosine triphosphate to selective attention. The larger questions in neuroscience require an integrated approach.

The Salk Institute was established in the 1960s by Jonas Salk, M.D., the developer of the polio vaccine.

Neuroscience

CSHL neuroscientists focus on understanding how neural activity and neural circuitry underlie behavior, and how disruptions in these circuits lead to neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, autism, schizophrenia and depression. Principal Investigator: Baldwin Goodell

Gray Matter Research focuses on Microdrive Systems and Recording Chamber Systems. For the BRAIN Initiative, Goodell and his colleagues aim to develop optrodes, which are implantable columns of lights and wires for simultaneous electrical recording of neurons and delivery of light flashes to multiple brain areas.
