As NIH Director, Dr. Collins oversees the work of the largest supporter of biomedical research in the world, spanning the spectrum from basic to clinical research. Dr. Collins is a physician-geneticist noted for his landmark discoveries of disease genes and his leadership of the international Human Genome Project, which culminated in April 2003 with the completion of a finished sequence of the human DNA instruction book. He served as director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the NIH from 1993-2008.

Interagency Working Group on Neuroscience

 

The Interagency Working Group on Neuroscience (IWGN) serves as part of the internal deliberative process of the National Science and Technology Councils (NSTC) Committee on Science. Co-Chairs are Robert Finkelstein and Amber Story.

The IWGN is charged to “coordinate activities in neuroscience research across the Federal government. The IWGN is a part of a wider White House Neuroscience Initiative that promotes partnerships with the private sector to advance neuroscience research and its impact.

Biosketch

Dr. Jo Handelsman was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor and Frederick Phineas Rose Professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at Yale University. She received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1984 and she served on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1985 until moving to Yale in 2010. Her research focuses on the genetic and functional diversity of microorganisms in soil, plant and insect gut communities. Handelsman’s lab is one of the pioneers of functional metagenomics, an approach to accessing the genetic potential of unculturable bacteria in environmental samples. Dr. Robert Finkelstein has been the Director of the NINDS Division of Extramural Research since November 2004. In this capacity, he is responsible for planning and policy, coordinating scientific programs funded by the Institute, and overseeing the scientific review, grants management, and administrative services of the extramural program.

Biosketch

Finkelstein earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1973, and his Ph.D. in biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1987; at MIT he worked on oncogene expression in neuroblastoma and teratocarcinoma cells. He pursued postdoctoral training in the department of genetics at Harvard Medical School. During this time he began studies of genetic regulation of nervous system development in the fly, which he continued as an assistant and then as a tenured associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

During his tenure at NINDS, he has served as scientific team leader for the neurogenetics cluster and as NINDS representative on a number of trans-NIH committees. He also formulated a 5-year agenda for tuberous ...
